This Earth Day our team is taking our Low Impact Collection in the sun to share earth-friendly care tips for your jeans. Denim care is important for the lifespan of your jeans as well as the Earth! Did you know that 39% of garments environmental impact come from washing, drying, and care? We know that washing and drying practices can make a huge sustainable impact, especially since denim is worn daily, here is our team's tip and tricks for low impact denim care:
1. The outdoors and fresh air: how often you wash your jeans.
Denim is an everyday staple but it does not need to be washed everyday! Practice letting your denim hang dry in the shade and get air to freshen it up when you're not wearing. We suggest washing your denim less! Minimizing denim wash is a good way to do your part on reducing energy use, your carbon footprint, and extends the life of your denim.
2. Water and detergent: how you wash your denim.
While we know it's easy to throw your jeans in the washer, hand-washing denim is one of the best practices you can have. If you're not trying to get rid of stains, hand-washing is always the best option. We have found it easiest to throw your denim in the tub with a bit of detergent and simply wash. It's also best to wash as infrequently as possible, trust us your denim can handle it and the less you use your laundry machines, the longer your denim will last!
3. Soap and Suds. What you wash your denim styles with.
Detergent is a big deal too! We came up with a list of some of our favorite detergents that are organic with biodegradable packaging, replacing traditional detergent with one of these earth friendly packages is the next step! Some brands we love that practice zero waste are: Blueland, Ecos, and if you're local to Los Angeles - try a sustainable shop like Sustain LA.
4. Sunlight & Shade. How you dry your denim.
By now we're sure you know, hang drying denim is the best practice for your jeans and the earth. If you've washed your denim you can hang dry them indoors overnight until they have completely dried. Looking to lighten your jeans wash? We recommend direct sunlight to brighten the denim or alter color. A little sunlight can go a long way!
If you're still in the need for new denim, we always recommend shopping our Low Impact Collection so you can look and feel good in your jeans. Our low impact styles are made from Repreve fabrications, making them recycled and earth friendly!
