Artist Spotlight: Sandra Morlett
1. Introduce yourself, where you’re from, your job, etc.
Hey! My name is Sandra Ruiz and I’m an artist. I was born in San Diego and raised in Playas de Rosarito. I currently live in Los Angeles and after living here for three months I started being represented by M Model Management where my job consists of auditioning and casting for commercials, film roles, modeling print, and some dance jobs. I also freelance with dance and dance choreography. I’m planning on going to Utah for a month next year to get a Somatics certification training workshop!
2. When did you start dancing and why?
I started learning 90’s pop choreography at 7 years old in front of the TV, which made me feel comfortable to perform in front of friends and family for fun. I was finally enrolled in ballet and jazz classes after regular school. The reason why my parents enrolled me in dance classes was that I was doing terrible at school ( they knew I needed a physical activity). The dance came naturally to me as if I had previous training. This was my first experience of belongingness.
3. What is your favorite type of dance to do and why?
Contact improvisation, score oriented dances where one gets to experience the body as a vessel. In this type of exploration, one uses the mind to make choices, decision making, the practice of seeing, asking questions, finding new possibilities of creation. I love this type of dance making because one gets to practice the individual-self through moving, writing and talking.
4. How has dancing influenced your daily life?
Ah! Tricky question.. has dancing influenced my daily life? or has my daily life influenced my dancing?
Each of us should search for methods and questions that reveal the power structures of dance training. Without those methods and questions, we end up participating in movements that are not of our own making.
5. Name three things you love about living in Los Angeles.
The arts
It’s geography
and pie and burger!
6. If you could be a dancer in any music video, which one would you choose and why?
Oh my, have you seen a Girlfriend by Christine and the queens? It's SO GOOD!!
